Why should I have a CCTV inspection?

The Importance of a Comprehensive Chimney and Stove Installation Inspection

When it comes to stove and chimney liner installations, a thorough onsite inspection is crucial to ensure that the process can be carried out safely and effectively. We perform detailed inspections to assess the condition of the chimney and determine whether a stove and liner can be installed without complications. This step is essential to ensure the chimney structure is sound and free from internal damage or degradation over time.

Our inspections provide both the customer and our team with valuable information about the chimney's condition and the feasibility of the installation before any work begins. One common issue we encounter is the unexpected narrowing or bending of the chimney chamber, which may be hidden from view. These hidden obstacles can prevent the installation of the ideal liner size, which may, in turn, require a different stove choice or necessitate remedial work on the chimney chamber or midfeathers. In some cases, it may even mean that installing a liner is not feasible at all.

Fortunately, 80% of the time, everything is in good condition, and we can proceed as planned. However, the additional information gathered from the inspection is invaluable for setting realistic expectations about what is achievable. In the past, before such inspection technologies were available, it was not uncommon for installation delays to occur due to unforeseen issues. These could range from having to switch to a smaller liner or stove to cutting into bedroom walls to force a liner into place, or discovering other significant chimney repairs were necessary. In extreme cases, we would have to abandon the project altogether.

Recently, we encountered two problematic chimneys: one was completely blocked with bricks and rubble, and the other had midfeathers that had deteriorated entirely, causing the flue to vent into an upstairs bedroom. Without a camera inspection, these issues would have remained hidden, leading to potential hazards during installation. Thanks to our inspection, we were able to resolve these problems before starting the installation process.

Conducting a thorough inspection not only improves decision-making but also helps avoid unpleasant surprises or difficult conversations during installation. It ensures a smooth process, with clear communication and expectations from the outset.
