Significant Decline in Emissions from Domestic Combustion in the UK

The latest Emissions of air pollutants in the UK – Particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) report from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) reveals a significant decline in emissions from domestic combustion, marking a notable achievement in the UK stove industry’s ongoing efforts to improve air quality and reduce environmental impact.
The report, published last week, shows that annual particulate emissions from domestic combustion have continued to decrease, falling below road transport emissions in 2023. This decline highlights the substantial progress made in reducing overall air quality impacts from domestic solid fuel and biomass combustion.

Emissions of PM2.5 and PM10 from domestic combustion have fallen by 17% between 2020 to 2023, with a 7% decrease shown in the latest data (2023) compared to 2022. Over the longer term, since 1990 there has been a 72% reduction in both PM2.5 and PM10 from domestic combustion.
Commenting on the latest data, Andy Hill, chair of the Stove Industry Association (SIA) said:
“This significant reduction in emissions from domestic combustion can be attributed to several factors, including the adoption of modern stove appliances and the use of better quality fuel, and increased consumer awareness and education. The SIA and its members have played a crucial role in this progress, working collaboratively to create cleaner and more efficient appliances, and to promote consumer best practice.”
